St Neots Cycling Club Sportive – Sunday 6th October 2013
After the great success of last year's 125km sportive, St Neots Cycling Club will be running a sportive this year on 6th October with two distances to choose from. If you're looking to wind down for the winter, choose our 61 mile route. For a bigger challenge, more climbing and even more beautiful country roads, choose our 100 mile route. In either case, you'll start the ride on St Neots' superb dedicated cycleways and then enjoy a rolling route along some of the quietest lanes and charming villages that Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire have to offer. Entries are limited to 200 riders so book now to avoid disappointment.
Online booking is now closed. There are 20 places available on the day, first come first served. To enter, go to the British Cycling page here and just complete the details requested. Those who are not members of British Cycling or who do not haveJ an account on the site will be asked to open an account with a password.
With just under 2000 feet of climbing, the 61 mile route will present a reasonable challenge but be accessible to all riders in good health and fitness, and perfect for an enjoyable end to the season. The 100 mile route has 2900 feet of climbing and will represent a good challenge for the time of year. Our sportive is open to all standards of riders, from those who are regular road cyclists clocking up the miles, to those who focus more on recreational riding but want to challenge themselves on the roads of Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. All we ask is that you have a roadworthy bike. There will be a range of abilities on the day, so come along and join us at the sportibve of the St Neots Cycling Club, one of the oldest clubs in the country.
Both routes will start at the One Leisure Centre in St Neots where there will be free parking. Whatever direction you are coming from the centre is very accessible, being close to the A1 and the A428.
Both routes will take you out of St Neots over the recently opened cycle bridge, the Willow Bridge, and then via Kimbolton and Spaldwick up the sharp hill to Barham. At Winwick the two routes split. The 61 mile route turns south via Old Weston and and Catworth and then turns west towards Raunds. The routes recombine near Raunds and return to St Neots via Pertenhall, Little Staughton and Colmworth. The 100 mile route adds a loop via Elton, Nassington, Apethorpe, Benefield and Brigstock. We will finish back at One Leisure and you will be able to enjoy a welcome meal of eggs or beans on toast included in the entry fee. See the routes here.
Registration at the One Leisure Centre will commence at 7.30am with the first riders away at 8am.
The routes will be fully signed and there will be support on the road from experienced St Neots Cycling Club cyclists who will be riding the routes. We will operate a broom wagon to rescue cyclists and bikes that have completely broken down.
We have engaged the services of a professional event photographer, George Burgess Photography, who will be taking photographs at registration and on the route. Every entrant will receive a 20% off voucher for sports massages, to be used at the event or up to six months after. There will be massages available after the ride to ease those aching legs, provided by b-activ, who specialise in massage therapy and fitness classes - first come, first served, for £8 with the voucher (normally £10).
