Rockingham Series, Race 6, 27th June.

The 6th Rockingham race was a cold and wet one. Joining race regulars Richard, Wayne and Steve was Alisdair Higgins, fresh in his Oxford Uni kit and quite unphased by the miserable conditions. Steve and Alisdair were in the 4th cat group, Richard and Wayne in with the 3rds.

The rain had stopped once the race got under way, but the track was slippery and the groups were enveloped in spray. A rider from the leading women's group crashed on the first lap.

Although the pace was quick, every corner was taken with caution. In the 3rds group Richard and Wayne were keeping near the front, a prudent move as a crash on the courses final bend saw several riders detached from the group.

A Maxifuel rider, from the small 2nd cat group, attacked our bunch as the 4th cats came into sight. He soon caught and pushed straight through them, picking up a single rider for company. Not long after the 3rd cat group caught the 4ths, but there was no attempt to reel in the leading two riders.

As the race entered the final laps, St Neots riders were active at the front and Richard tried a couple of attacks, but was reeled in each time. On the last lap three riders did manage to slip away, while behind the rest of the bunch lined up for the bunch sprint. Wayne was highest placed, coming 5th, followed by Richard (13th), Steve (18th) and Alisdair bringing up the rear.

NCRA Summer Series, Race 2 Southwick.

The Fourth of July and summer had finally arrived for Thursday night racing. A 60 strong field turned out including Wayne, Richard, Alisdair, and Adrians Bloxham and Lancaster.

Richard and Wayne were in the 3rd group to start, the other 3 in the first group off. The pace as immediately fast, but the group's attempts at organisation were hit and miss. Half way into the race it was caught by the formidable, 13 strong scratch group. However, catching the two lead groups proved more difficult, they clearly had some decent organisation and reasonable riders to keep the 3rd + scratch group at bay.

The catch was made with 400m to go, at the bottom of the long climb up to the finish line and for Richard and Wayne, quite possibly the worst place to make it. Riders fanned across the road, while we were getting boxed in further back. Still Wayne managed to make the most of a bad situation to sprint to 15th place, and highest among the St Neots riders. Nevertheless, it was a good race for the Adrians and Alisdair. With its hill top finish, the Southwick course is always a tough one, and this race was no exception. So they did well not only to finish but to stay away until the very end. Especially when between them, before this race they averaged just one race each.
