Club Run Report - 10th Nov 2013

Another cold but sunny day (some brave souls still had shorts on) greeted the riders for this morning's club run heading south.

Initially 13 riders started on the medium, 47 mile route but our numbers were soon swelled by the arrival of others including some of the Cambourne branch of SNCC and we made a steady pace over Tetworth Hill and through Potton. Through Wrestlingworth and Guilden Morden, yours truly caught the first puncture of the day at Steeple Morden, pointed out by Mark G. I thought it felt a little lumpy on the back... At this point Richard O joined us on his single speed after repairing the puncture he had got at home, commanding instant respect from his many geared colleagues.

On we went through Ashwell and got as far as Hinxworth before Ian B caught the first of his flats. It was at this point that the group split and six of us decided to take a slightly more relaxed pace to the day's proceedings. Ian mentioned that his tyres were tricky to get off, a fact noted by one of his tyre levers breaking which possibly contributed to his second puncture. Unfortunately Ian caught a third near Southill, I think it was safe to say he didn't have the best of luck today.

We pressed on over the A1 at Langford, during which a fire engine (not on a call) attempting an ill-judged overtake almost took out Mark C, and a resident of Ickwell proclaimed 'Why don't you leave us alone? You cyclists are a nuisance'. Obviously a group of six cyclists pose more of a threat than a car to local residents. Shaking our heads in disbelief over the past two incidents, we headed on towards home through Moggerhanger and Blunham towards Roxton, over the A428 and towards the Bushmead Road and home.

In spite of several visits from the puncture fairy, bad driving and baffling comments, it was a good ride. Let's hope we have more days (weather wise anyway!) like these.
