As many of you know, we’ve had a couple of quite nasty accidents this year and we have had to call upon the help of the emergency services, including Magpas Helimedix and the East Anglian Air Ambulance. With that in mind, this year we decided we would donate the profits from our Autumn Breeze Sportive to help these charities.

Today I visited the Magpas Helimedix head quarters in Huntingdon to present a cheque for £1250, raised from the sportive. Unfortunately the crew was out on a call, but I still had an opportunity to have a look around and see what they do.

A big part of Magpas’ work is to train doctors and paramedics in advance pre-hospital medicine, techniques that are essential for tackling the most severe trauma cases. Magpas trained Helimedix crews can perform potentially life-saving treatments, from inducing a medical coma to performing an amputation, which would otherwise have to wait until a patient arrived at hospital – and that might just be too late.

Magpas also operate a helicopter and rapid response vehicles. To put the club’s donation in to context, it will pay for two emergency callouts for the helicopter.

So once again, a big thank you to everyone who took volunteered to help or took part in this year’s sportive to make it such a big success.
