Today’s routes were to take us north to Huntingdon and then into Fen country before the turn for home through the Giddings and Kimbolton. 12 met at the Market Square, and with the route going through the Offords, the Buckden Boys did not have their usual run down the A1, and so 3 more were added to the peloton by the time the group was heading up to Godmanchester.

The wind was very firmly from the north this morning and all were glad that some extra layers had been applied to keep out the cold. However, with the strong winds and an injection of pace, the bunch started to split. By Huntingdon group 2 had made an early split and we watched group 1 slowly disappear over the horizon.

Group 2 slogged across the Fens to Sawtry. From there the wind was mercifully behind us and we had an enjoyable, leisurely ride back to St Neots via Barham, Spaldwick, Kimbolton and Staughton.

Group 1 made a steady pace into the wind from Huntingdon and headed for Abbots Ripton and then for Ramsey St Mary and then the delightful turn to Holme. For some of the new club members this was their first experience of this flat track (and the Fens) and the group became stretched as we pushed into the wind. The level crossing was down at Holme which allowed us to re-group. The pace picked up with the wind now more favourable and we followed the familiar run down through the Giddings, Winwick, Catworth, Kimbolton and home.
