It's been a very busy couple of weeks for St Neots Cycling Club. Attendance at the weekly Time Trial has been exceptional, we held our 100 miler club run and members have been doing well in open competitive events, both triathlon and road racing. We attended the St Neots Festival of Cycling and we have been making significant progress towards our ambition of becoming a GoRide Club. The date for the Club Summer Barbecue has been announced. All we need now is a real summer to go with all these summery activities, but as I write the temperature is struggling to get above double figures, the wind is howling and the rain is lashing down. Still, the only option is to follow Rule 5 and get the miles in - and to be fair, we have had some amazing days in between the poorer weather, as some of the items below show. A quick reminder that we have affiliated to NDCA - Northampton and District Cycling Association - that runs an excellent time trial series and it would be great if our members would enter more of these open events - more info next newsletter.
9th May Time Trial. On a night for only the brave, and some would say the foolhardy, 10 dedicated members of the Club were in attendance at the 3rd TT of the season. The wind was fierce and at 7pm we had hailstones to add to the already almost sub zero temperature. One rider was regretting the short sleeve jersey choice as he stood shivering at the start. Adrian overcame all of this to be fastest on the night when some sterling times were recorded.
Richard returns to take the top spot on 16th May TT. The 4th TT of the St Neots Cycling Club series for 2013 saw 27 riders at the start looking to test themselves on the challenging 11.2 mile sportive course at Abbotsley. Unlike last week, the conditions were very favourable this evening allowing 11 PBs to be set and notable amongst these were Chris Ritchie getting under 28 minutes for the first time and Adrian Taverna breaking the 29 minute barrier. New member, Darren Preston, continues to impress, with all his times this year under 29 minutes.
Competing in their local event, on Sunday 19th May, St Neots Cycling Club members had a fantastic set of results including second overall and three age category wins. Several SNCC members, including Tom Stead, Richard Hancock, Mick Lawrence, Steve Pleasance and Lee Radley, took part in the first of the local NiceTri Sprint series. Tom turned in a great performance coming second overall in 1:08:27 and winning his age category (15-16). Richard came fifth overall in 1:09:01 as well as having the best bike split of the day in 36:23 and winning his age category (45-49)
It all started a few weeks ago. For reasons unknown to me, Chris decided he fancied riding an Audax and for reasons equally unknown to me, I found myself asking him if he wanted some company on the road. So, we found ourselves signing up for a new event, the Dassett Dawdle, a 213km event starting in Bedford on Sunday 5 May. I didn't really know what to expect from an Audax, but had the vague idea that it was a sportive for people with beards who cycled while wearing tweed. We arrived at the event early on Sunday morning (dropped off by my very understanding wife) to find that the truth was somewhat different.
A date for your diary: Announcing the St Neots Cycling Club summer barbecue, to be held at Alec's house in Buckden on Sunday, June 30th 2013. All members of the club are welcome to attend, along with partners and kids. The plan is to gather from about 3pm. The cost will £5 per head to cover the cost of food; bring your own drink. We had a great time last year and hope to entertain even more club members this year.
Dan Baxter is organising a discounted Retul bike fit for members, having had one himself and being impressed by the proess. You can read more about the details on the forum (link below). It is a very thorough process including analysis of flexibility, muscle group domininance etc and then you get to wear sensors that gauge your position whilst pedalling on the turbo trainer. You also get full reports that give you all the feedback and a frame chooser option.
Gareth Smith and Stephen Lyons attended the first two days of the training to become British Cycling coaches and to establish our GoRide programme for children. They now have to run four sessions under British Cycling guidelines for a minmum of five children each for each session before their final day's training in August - after that we will be able to set up the full GoRide programme. We are looking for parents to volunteer their children (between six and 15 years old) to attend the sessions before August. More details available from Gareth by contacting him directly, via the contact form on the website or via twitter @JPS_Dante
St Neots Festival of Cycling
The club had a presence at the St Neots Festival of Cycling in St Neots Market Square on Saturday 18th May. We had interest from the public, showed the club colours and ogled the beautiful 1970s Bianchi on display
Club Run 5th May
40(!) cyclists congregated at the Market Square this morning to enjoy one of the best days so far this year in terms of weather and there were plenty of white legs and arms on display after their winter hibernation. Plenty of activity today with an Introductory Ride led by Andy Holt, the Group 1 route set by Joe and Mark C preparing the Group 2 route .
Sunday, 19th May, weather was still and warm once the early morning chill had lifted. Twenty six riders turned up in the Market Square - with a few being away on holiday or competing in the St Neots Nicetri Sprint Triathlon, this was a good turn-out.
