It's been a long time since I did any great distance off-road. I've got some new wheels and tyres on their way to me. The forecast for this weekend looks suitably mud-inducing so a good time to get some practice in!

You should have a go on the Three Shires way and some of the by-ways all west of Kimbolton. Hartham Street just off Grafham is fun while the by-way from Shelton to Yielden is mud heaven (if you like that sort of thing) - I usually stick cross tyres on the Langster to tackle them...

yeah.. I know a few local byways from riding my off-road motrcycle around the area. I hadn't tried the Hartham street one tho. I might give that a bash.

While we're kinda on the subject, I'm a member of the TRF (Trail Rider Fellowship) which is an organisation to promote responsible trail riding (of the motorised kind) and to help preserve historic, public rights of way for the benefit of all.
In their latest 'Trail' magazine there is a discussion regarding rights of access of cyclists and horse riders on ways designated as 'footpaths'. Apparently, the law has been clear, for the last 150 years, that there has been no summary means whereby a person can be convicted of a criminal offence by riding a bicycle or horse over a public footpath (R vs Pratt 1867, R vs Simpson 1895).
So it's not unlawful to ride a bike on a footpath, but it might be hard to explain that when challenged.
