2015 Season Review

Read this introduction to the 2016 SNCC time trial series which includes a review of the 2015 season and the starting Handicap Times for club members who have already established base times.

2015 again saw some of our TT series curtailed by roadworks on the course, although we only had to cancel one event but had to use a shortened course on a couple of occasions. However, this still left 15 ‘normal’ evenings of racing. For continuity of results and to keep the Personal Best (PB) records of the TT intact only the results from the ‘normal’ events are included within the new PB and Handicap Table below.

The table includes the current PBs for all club members as at 28/4/16 and the handicaps indicated will be used until a rider improves on their time towards the 2016 Handicap Trophy.

Last season we had 78 riders (54 members and 24 guests) taking part in the series (up from 62 in 2014) totalling 402 rides (average 22 riders per evening), and representing over 4500 racing miles around the Abbotsley course. The course record fell several times during the season, and on a couple of occasions on the same night, with a fastest time of 23.58 being set by David McGaw of Cambridge CC. Across all 15 ‘normal’ events the average time was 30.20. We’re hoping that a roadwork-free summer will again see at least that level of interest from riders seeking to test themselves on the challenging 11.2 mile ‘sporting’ course.
As before we have 2 season-long Trophies to compete for in 2016 :

1. Handicap Trophy – basically anyone in the Club can win this Trophy provided they continue to improve their time over the course of the season and indeed three of the winners in the past four years have done so in their first season of competition. For rules , see the website.

2. Fastest Time Trial – speaks for itself, whoever posts the fastest time between now and the end of the season on 25th August 2016.

We’re sure there will have been some serious training taking place over the winter months plus some inevitable investment in new bikes & wheels, and no doubt a few will have improved PB’s in mind

Very good to see so many “Old Hands” and “first timers” at the “TT Taster” session on 21st April, will the winner of the 2016 Handicap Trophy come from one of you?

Without the sterling efforts of our timekeepers Mandy and Colin and without volunteers to help with the putting out and taking down the safety notices the rest of us would not be able to enjoy the TT season, so many thanks to all of them.
Whether an old hand at the TTs or whether this will be your first season taking part then we do hope that you will enjoy the experience and we look forward to seeing you at the start line between now and the end of August.

The key to winning the Handicap trophy is to be consistent with your times, to keep improving through the season and to compete in as many TTs as you can. Also to hope that when you achieve a good time that there is a large field so that you are able to claim a large number of points for that evening.

Congratulations to Chris Green, who in his first season with the Club, was anointed as the 2015 Handicap winner with a final points tally of 225. Rumour has it that Chris cancelled all his holidays until the end of the season to ensure that he would remain in contention for the Trophy, and his commitment has certainly paid off by not missing any of the races. A great effort in his first season with the Club. Chris opened the season with a 33:30 and ended the season with a PB of 28:59 an improvement of 4:31. Congratulations also to Simon and Nic who finished second and third with points totals that would have won the Trophy in many previous years.
