Event 2 - Guilden Morden
On what seemed like the first scorching hot day for a very long time SNCC hosted what was the second round in this years’ NDCA series at the end of May, a 25 mile event on the nearby F14/25 course.
As part of our aim of increasing inclusiveness we not only incorporated a separate ‘Road Bike’ competition, but also had this included as part of the national AeroCoach series meaning we were able to offer equal prizes between men & women for this. Hopefully this allow more and a wider range of riders to make that first step from ‘Club’ to ‘Open’ events.
In total we had over 80 riders on the start sheets, with ages from juniors to those with ‘a lot more experience’ and abilities from first-time riders to a professional rider with National and World Champion medals & stripey jerseys.
The day went very well with everyone adapting to the covid-secure arrangements and some very impressive times recorded, with John Archibald of Alberto Contador’s Eolo Kometa team winning by over a minute; with Sam the best placed SNCC rider in 5th overall, and Peteborough CC breaking the 37 year old NDCA team record…..with additional kudos to the SNCC team who finished second on the day.
On a personal note, I’m pleased to say that I didn’t get any reports from my marshals or observers that any riders put themselves in danger at any of the turns (or anywhere else on the course) and ‘only’ a couple of reports of shouty motorists (inc a dubious claim of people riding three-abreast). I was also very happy to be able to pass on thanks to the Marshals & Time Keepers from many of the riders.
Hopefully next year will see us be able to return to the post-ride cuppa & cake that really makes these events a great social as well as sporting occasion.
