It isn't often that a St Neots CC club run is cancelled. You can count on one finger the number of times it happens in a year. This Sunday was one of those rare days. If you haven't witnessed the "mega freeze" that the country has been experiencing you are either a) abroad or b) locked up in an underground bunker.

This last weekend saw a significant fall of snow in our beloved St Neots, with most of the white stuff being dumped on us during the day on Sunday. Unsuitable riding conditions for most.

A group of five took this opportunity to dust off those evil mountain bikes that lie abandoned for most of the year in the shed and take them out for a jolly in the snow. A route was set from Shaftesbury Avenue then around Grafham Water. Myself (David L), Mark B and Dan B met and were set to meet Richard O and Steve B at the Grafham carpark.

Much of the snow was compacted making semi-used paths and roads pretty hazardous. Dan B was the first and second casualty falling off. With a diagnosis of hyper-inflated tyres we pushed on and then the heavens opened with a blizzard.

Our very slow and precarious progress to Grafham meant that we missed both Richard and Steve. Richard continued regardless and managed 15 miles and Steve went home - can't say I blame him.

I can, hand on heart, say this was one of the most enjoyable rides I've been on - not only did you need concentration but just a few miles out of town it was so barren and beautiful. We safely made it around the lake and headed to Paxton Pits for some more.

25 miles done in -3 degrees in a blizzard. Brilliant!
