Yup, all gears, exactly the same pedal position!

Strangest thing i find is that it doesn't happen on the turbo trainer, guess that's to do with not being able to roll the bike about.

Is it just a clunk noise or does it feel like your pedal / crank moves slightly without driving the rear wheel?

Have you been able to eliminate shoe / cleat issues by trying riding with trainers on the pedals instead of being clipped in?

Can't feel a thing with it, another thing i find really strange about it.

Will have to try sans cleats in the morning!

Bizarre as it might seem, it's likely going to be that your back wheel quick release clamp is not tight enough. I see that you have had the back wheel out and put it back, but it might help to put a drop of oil between the quick release clamp and the frame drop outs before you tighten it back up, as this will allow you to nip it up a little tighter.

There should be quite a bit of effort needed to close a quick release clamp.

The noise you are hearing at the same point each stroke is the wheel hub "slipping" against the drop outs with the pressure of each pedal rev and this being amplified by your frame.

This happens to my bike every now and then and each time it's the back wheel that needs tightening.

hi there just a few observations,, never over tighten quick release clamps, light hand pressure is sufficient.it will snap if brute force is used..if what you say is correct, the wheel would "pull over" and hit the chain stays, it does not so it is tight enough///.....i have had a though ,, it just could be that your cassette hub carrier is full of water. it does pee it down in the UK.. why not spray some wd40 into the gap between the the lock ring and body , let it soak through and then say after a couple of hours put in a good dose of 3 in 1 oil...clean it up and try it...G..

Well i tried lubing the rear drop outs and tightening, as tight as i sensibly can (wasn't exactly lose to start), no change.

Found a pair of pedals with toe straps kicking around, so put those on and no change.

With regard the cassette carrier, have swapped the back wheel for another that hasn't been used in the wet (girlfriends bike, never rides in the rain!) still the same!

About to go and set to it with a set of allen keys and make sure everything is tight, top to bottom, front to back, see what i can find!!

Right, seems like i've finally got it!!

Not sure why i had it with another rear wheel, but it seems that it's because the rear axle was loose.

Went through and tightened everything i could find, nothing seemed particularly lose, noticed the spokes near the cassette were grubby, and then while cleaning them, noticed a lot of play in the wheel, had it out and then could undo the nut with my fingers, definitely not good!

So had it apart, one of the seals has a crack, so will have to see if i can find one of those (though it is a 13 year old wheel set)

Lots of grease, back together, quick test ride, all seems good!!

So thank you every one for their input on working it out, will see you out on the road week after next!! :cheer:
